"I peep under the slip holder, and there it is. When I switch it on, a little sigh escapes me as the screen lights up. Ten minutes later I am rolling on the floor, snarling and biting, trying to wrestle it from the hands of an Apple press representative.... One melancholy thought occurs as my fingers glide and flow over the surface of this astonishing object: Douglas Adams is not alive to see the closest thing to his Hitchhiker's Guide that humankind has yet devised."
--Stephen Fry, author and actor, in aTime magazine article describing his recent meeting with Apple's Steve Jobs and brief, pre-release encounter with an iPad.

ooh. I want one too. I only just acquired my first laptop, and have no other iGadget, but from what I've read (not just this quote) I really want one.

I substitute teach in LA public high schools and often bring magazines as a way of keeping kids occupied--doing something constructive rather than getting into trouble. Usually, PEOPLE is a big hit, however, Steve Job's cover drew a crowd and Fry's account of his bonding with the iPad made me want to forget my teaching days are numbered as the District runs out of money. One kid announced he had already acquired one from "a friend who jacked it."It's proved very popular in my world--the hype is masterful.

That is awesome ... made me cry a little bit, though. I miss Douglas Adams a great deal!
